EMERGENCY services were called this morning (Monday) after concerns were raised about a possible chemical reaction.

Police were contacted after reports of a strange smell coming from a drain in Lower St James Street, a police spokesman said.

Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue service was also called to attend.

A police spokesman said two members of staff at a hair salon were evacuated as a precaution.

The police spokesman said they took advice from other emergency services and ventilated the premises. No health issues were identified, according to the spokesman, who said the issue had been resolved.
