Police investigate 'bone' discovery

AN item believed to be a bone, discovered in an area close to where police previously searched for the body of missing teenager Damien Nettles, was found to be bamboo a force spokesman has confirmed.

Isle of Wight police were called to an area on the banks of the River Medina, close to Stag Lane, following the discovery on Thursday.

The spokesman said: "We can confirm a report was received on Thursday, of what appeared to be a bone on the banks of the River Medina in the Stag Lane area of Newport on the Isle of Wight.

"Police attended the scene where it was established promptly that the object reported was a piece of bamboo.

"No criminal offences or suspicious circumstances were identified.

"No further police action was taken.

"The family of Damien Nettles has been informed."

Police searched an area off the Cowes to Newport cycle track in May 2011, but found no significant evidence.
