Police issue flood advice for drivers

MOTORISTS have been advised to take care on coastal roads ahead of possible localised flooding.

The Met Office has forecast showers tonight (Tuesday) and further, possibly heavier downpours tomorrow a police spokesman said.

Coupled with high winds and high tides around lunchtime, there is the potential for flooding around coastal areas.

Police have warned drivers to take care and issued the following advice:

• Driving in rain means a driver’s stopping distance will double on a wet road.

• Motorists should ensure that they maintain a safe distance and slow to a safe speed, as there will be a reduction in tyre grip.

• If steering is suddenly unresponsive then it probably means that water is preventing the tyres from gripping the road surface properly, so brake slowly and gently in order to slow down.

• Rain and spray from other vehicles may make it difficult to see and be seen. Drivers should therefore keep well back from the vehicle in front, and maintain a safe distance.

• On flooded roads, don’t attempt to cross the water if it is too deep. If you must cross, drive slowly in first gear and keep the engine speed high to help prevent stalling.

• Avoid the deepest water, normally nearest the curb, and remember to test your brakes after you drive through water by pressing down on the brake pedal gently.

I agree with Mr. Cares.
If you didn't already know any of the above, then you shouldn't be driving.

My worldly advice on the subject is- Only a fool breaks the two second rule, in cold rain and snow at least doubly so. (For all you young drivers, look it up)
Also, when driving through deep water, approach slowly, speed up to make a bow wave, then slow right down and follow the wave as this is now slightly shallower than the surrounding water.
Diesel engines will run underwater... BUT only if the air filter is above water level, and if your engine sucks in water, bent con rods and crankshaft,, ££££s ouch!! So do not go ploughing into floods just for a laugh!!
Loads more advice, but the main one is USE COMMON SENSE!!
Thank you kindly, I am here all week.
