A Borehamwood woman has set up a help group for people diagnosed with cancer and their families.

Sue Freeman, 49, of Stanborough Avenue, Borehamwood, said Lifeline, the Borehamwood and District Cancer Support Group, is much-needed in the area.

The first meeting is being held at the Monkswood Community Hall in Monkswood Gardens, Borehamwood, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm on Tuesday.

"This group is for anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer and has had treatment, and for their families, who need support as well.

"We will be offering practical and emotional help, through people speaking to other people," she said.

The group aims to help people with all types of cancer, from Borehamwood, Elstree, Shenley and Radlett.

Mrs Freeman, who works at Bonusprint in Stirling Way, said cancer support groups are normally provided at hospitals.

But because Borehamwood has no hospital, patients have been forced to travel as far as Barnet and Watford.

"Many people do not want to travel out of Borehamwood. A lot of people stay at home and feel isolated," she said.

The sessions will be a chance for people to chat, to listen to each other, to have a cup of tea -- and hopefully meet someone who has been through very similar experiences.

Mrs Freeman, who has two children and three grandchildren, was diagnosed as suffering from breast cancer more than two years ago and attended a help group in East Barnet.

"Some groups are held during the day and there are a lot of people who still go on working when they have cancer. They have to," she said.

The group will aim to give "holistic" treatment, that is treatment for the whole person, and aromatherapy and reflexology will be on-offer.

Ridgehill Housing Association has offered the use of Monkswood Hall free of charge. And the Leeming Road Community Shop, managed by the Borehamwood Community Partnership, has printed publicity leaflets at no cost.

Mrs Freeman said anyone who wants more information about the group is welcome to leave a message on her answer-phone. Telephone 0181 386 5859.
