FORCE TEN gusts brought some Isle of Wight ferry services to a halt last night (Thursday), while many homes in Newport were left without power due to a fault.

Wind speeds of about 50 knots were reported in parts of the Solent, along with heavy rain, leading to the cancellation of some Red Funnel Services.

Their services had returned to normal by about 11pm and Hovertravel, Wightlink and Red Funnel were reported to be running as normal this morning (Friday).

At about 9pm, 1,500 homes in Newport were hit by a power cut.

*A Southern Electric spokesman said an overhead line in the Newport area was brought down by high winds at 9.17pm.

Most homes had power restored last night, however 58 properties were without electricity for the duration of the repairs, which were not completed until 7.02am.

The Met Office warned earlier this week that there could be more bad weather to come over the weekend.
