OVER a thousand homes in Newport, on the Isle of Wight, were affected by power cuts last night.
Southern Electric received reports of a problem at around 4.05am and sent engineers to assess the issue.
During this time 1,734 customers were without power.
It was established that the fault was due to a underground cable and power was restored to most homes by 7am.
Eight households remained without power on Blackwater Road, until 7.50am.
A spokesperson for Southern Electric said: "We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused this morning.
"Obviously, because it was a fault with an underground cable, we will have to carry out some follow up work."
