UPDATED 16:01*

HOMES in Ventnor, Whitwell, Niton and Chale Green have been affected by a power cut this afternoon (Friday).

Southern Electric apologised to customers via its Twitter feed and said that engineers were working to restore supplies.

Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said it had been called to a report of a pylon fire on Blythe Shute, Chale, at 1.46pm.

One fire engine from Newport attended.

*A fire spokesman said that the fire was out by 2.38pm.

A Southern Electric spokesman said that the power went off at about 1.30pm due to a fault in a transformer on an overhead power line which caused a small fire.

The spokesman said that initially about 1,700 customers were cut off in the area but power supplies had been re-routed and about 150 remained without power.

They added that engineers were on site at Blythe Shute and Sheep Lane and that the priority was to get all customers reconnected as soon as possible.

In some areas there were power cuts last Friday, from 4pm to 6pm when a fuse was blown at the sub station for the Ventnor area and we were told to expect more cuts, as there is a break in some wiring that they cant find yet and we could loose power at any time, so fingers crossed not on the 25th at least.
How they cant locate and fix said wire with todays technology is beyond me.
