Prominent councillor to retire

Friday, October 5, 2012 - 14:06

ONE of the Isle of Wight's most high-profile councillors has announced his retirement.
Cllr Roger Mazillius, Isle of Wight Councillor for Northwood, will not stand for re-election next year.
At Cowes Town Council last night (Thursday), Cllr Mazillius, who is also a Cowes Town Councillor, said: "It is not without a great deal of regret that I have decided not to seek re-election next spring.
"I will then be in my 75th year and would have represented Northwood for 15 years, and ideally a younger person could represent the ward.
"Of course, I will continue to be a fully active member of the council until the May elections and continue to represent residents to the best of my ability.
"This is important to me as there are several major decisions to taken with a strong local context, including the asphalt plant planning application, education provision at local schools and highways issues."
As previously reported, Cllr Mazillius will step down as Isle of Wight Council cabinet member for social care and housing next month, following a reshuffle, to be replaced by Cllr Stuart Hutchinson.
