CONTROVERSIAL plans to develop a plot of land, bequeathed to the RSPCA for grazing only, are recommended for approval.
Planners will decide on Tuesday whether to grant permission for the residential development off Cliff Road, Totland, comprising four detached, four-bedroom houses, with gardens and garages.
The land was left to the RSPCA by Totland resident Beatrice Albiston, who died in 2001, with the proviso the animal charity retain it for grazing only. Her will stated the land should not be sold off.
But the RSPCA hopes to sell the land, with planning permission, to raise funds for a new £50,000 wildlife centre at Godshill. More than 20 objections have been received, with many saying the development will have an adverse impact on wildlife. The Red Squirrel Project and the Badger Trust West Sussex are among the objectors.
A petition has been signed by 100 people claiming the RSPCA has ignored Mrs Albiston’s wishes but the Isle of Wight Council’s planning committee has been advised such objections fall outside the scope of the planning system.
