A SUSPECTED fire at a Ryde pub yesterday (Monday) turned out to be gas escaping from a fridge.

One of Ryde’s busiest streets was closed off for almost two hours while the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service investigated a report of smoke billowing from a cellar at the Liquid Lounge, in Union Street.

The emergency call was received at 4.30pm. Gas had leaked from a fridge and an engineer was called to fix it, said a fire service spokesman.

Union Street was reopened at around 6.30pm.
