Pub girl’s cheers to 100th

Queenie ‘Nin’ Bailey on her birthday.

A WOMAN who grew up in one of the Island’s oldest pubs celebrated her 100th birthday on Christmas Day.

Queenie Bailey, also known as Nin, moved to the Island aged four from Portsmouth.

She grew up in the Buddle Inn, Niton — the same pub where her mother was born in 1889 — and went to Branstone House School, in Newport, with her brother Alec and sister Sylvia.

In 1935 she married Frank, also known as Jack, in Niton Church, and was widowed in 1979.

Nin enjoyed travelling with her husband and holiday destinations included Devon, Cornwall, Paris, Belgium, France, Scotland and Wales.

In 1940, Nin worked at Saunders Roe and helped at Cornubia and Columbine factories on the control panels for the Walrus biplane.

She has many memories of the Second World War. Nin was near Niton Radio Station when an enemy plane swooped low over the sea and divebombed one of the nearby boats and sunk it.

After the war, Nin worked as a cleaner and cook at Mount Cleaves, a large house in Niton.

She was also a regular contributor to The Maple Society Newsletter with her stories of war and life in Niton.

Nin has two nieces and two nephews on the Island.

A bottle of champagne and cake were shared with her family after a card from the Queen was opened.

Happy birthday Nin. As a 'caulkhead', I was taken by my parents to the Buddle many times for a Sunday out. As a naughty teenager I also used to jump on the Mystery Tour Coaches on Ryde Esplanade and tell the tourists that thyey were going to St Catherine's and the Buddle Inn!!
