Ray meets Island’s badgers

Ray Mears meets Breez and, below, the badgers, which were being filmed.

BADGER dog Breez helped sniff out wildlife for TV survival expert and naturalist Ray Mears.

While the presenter was recently filming on the Isle of Wight for a future show, he was helped by the German shepherd, Breez, at one of them.

Graham Lee, of the Badger Trust Isle of Wight, and Breez have been monitoring activity at a badger set for the show.

"Breez can get to areas I cannot reach, and, when she is wearing an HD camera, I can see what she sees. She has been specially trained not to disturb badger activity," said Graham.

"The set we have been monitoring for the show was ideal as the badgers live in dense woodland and have no disturbance from cars or humans.

"It was a couple of miles walking to get there with the film crew and equipment but the weather was great. It was a peaceful location and everyone was pleased with the filming.

"Meeting Ray Mears and watching him work was fantastic. He is very knowledgeable, helpful and interesting to talk to and he really liked Breez.

"He took a few photos of her in the customised sidecar, which is her favourite mode of transport during the summer. The goggles are not for show, they stop flies and grit getting in her eyes as she motors along with the wind in her face."

Nice to see Ray Mears on the Island. I bumped into a film crew who were doing some filming off the Needles on a wreck out there with Ray and by the sounds of it it’s going to be an amazing series when shown. Looking forward to it.
