Ruxley Park Club champion Danny beat off stiff competition from 59 other Kent club champions at Dartford golf course to finish two shots clear of a high quality field.

Heavy rain and a blustery wind made conditions difficult for the golfers and at the turn, 1996 champion Darren Ottoway of Wrot-ham Heath led Curtis by a single stroke.

But bogeys for Ottoway at the 10th, 13th and 14th holes paved the way for Curtis to come through and, despite dropping a shot himself at the fifteenth, the 1998 champion wrapped up the win on the 15th hole with a par.

Stirling work by the ground staff allowed the competition to tee off on time but downpours meant there was very little run of the ball on the damp fairways and greens which meant scoring was generally high with no one beating par.

From a modest start in 1986 with an entry of 35 club champions, the Watson Trophy has grown in stature to become one of the major attractions of the Kent golfing calendar.
