AN EXCELLENT weekend for Woodford Green Athletic Club with Essex Ladies saw top-four finishes for three teams competing in track and field meetings.

The senior men were at Ashton Playing Fields in Woodford Bridge where they enjoyed a tight contest with Southend AC, eventually edged into second place out of seven teams.

Woodford scored a total of 156.5 points to finish just five points behind the winners. Third-placed Havering-Mayesbrook were well behind with 80 points.

Tim O'Dell produced an outstanding display to win both the A 100m (11.1sec) and the A 200m (22.7sec).

Other event winners were Leon Grant in the A 400m (49.7sec), Tatum Johnson in the B 400m (49.8sec), Graham Hedman in the B 100m (10.8 sec), Simon Ciaravella in the B 200m (23.1sec) and Bob Earle in the A hammer (56.49m).

Fergus Harford took the B hammer (43.59m), Gareth Dyball won the A high jump (1.95m), James Wright took the A pole vault (3.8m), Dan Elias the B pole vault (3.8m) and Tom Sawyer won the B shot (12.49m).

The ladies team were at Bedford where they registered a creditable fourth-place finish in their first Southern Women's League division one meeting.

The ladies were promoted from division two last season but adjusted well to the step up in class.

They won 11 events and came second in seven more to score a total of 160 points.

World junior 100m hurdles champion Julie Pratt won her event in 13.7sec as well as the A 200m in 25.8sec.

Esther Augee won the A hammer with 49.36m and the B shot with 11.56m. Another double came from Carol Moir who won the B javelin (35.13m) and the B discus (29.97m)

An outstanding performance in the under-15 girls came from Iyesha Tomlinson who won the shot (10.97m), the discus (33.98m) and the javelin (25.12), setting personal bests in all three events.

Woodford's junior boys team, who also won promotion last season, were at Barnet's Copthall Stadium for the first fixture of their McDonald's League premier division campaign and finished in third.

Sprinter Monu Miah was the star of the show with wins in the under-17 A 100m and A 200m and also the 4 x 100m relay. George Johnson won the under-17 B 100m and the A 100m hurdles.

Other winners were Stuart Hawkins in the under-15 400m and Tom Horn in the under-17 javelin.
