RESIDENTS only parking could be introduced across the Isle of Wight.

Following calls for residents' parking zones during the parking strategy consultation earlier this year, the Isle of Wight Council has published guidance for introducing them Island wide.

Given the number of requests already made, the guidance suggests parking surveys are carried out to identify where they are most needed.

The price of permits has yet to be determined, although it will have to cover the cost of administering the scheme.

Businesses operating within a zone will not be eligible for a permit.

Residents in some areas have long complained they cannot park near their homes because the spaces are taken by commuters and shoppers.

Providing there are no objections, an eight week public consultation will now be carried out.

According to a council paper published today (Thursday): "The outcome will be used to inform a future cabinet paper on the introduction of an Island wide residents' parking zones scheme. This paper will clearly set out he challenge and resources required to introduce such a scheme and present a range of options for members to consider.

"Residents' parking zones have been introduced in the past, however there has never been a written policy on how and when they should be introduced. Officers and members get repeated requests for such schemes across the Island."

The decision to consult was made by cabinet member for infrastructure and transport, Cllr Ian Ward, using delegated powers. Providing it is not called in, it will be implemented next Friday, December 1.
