THE centre of Lewisham enjoyed an injection of Celtic flair when paraders brought a touch of the Irish to town, and their Irish eyes were really smiling despite the weather.

Bands, banners, floats and more than the odd shamrock were out in force on Saturday as the Irish, and those who have affiliation with the Irish, took to the streets to mark St Patrick's Day.

The local Irish community organised the parade, which started in Catford, and entertained people all the way to Lewisham Shopping Centre.

The line-up included the St Patrick's Drum and Fife Band, Celtic Cross Youth Accordion Marching Band and Grover the Irish wolfhound.

Lewisham Mayor Dave Sullivan also joined in the celebrations.

Lunchtime shoppers were treated to music and dance before the parade returned to the Irish Community Centre in Davenport Road for an afternoon shindig which saw more than a few pints of Guinness being consumed.

A traditional St Patrick's ceilidh was organised that evening at the centre to round off the celebrations.
