DRINK drive arrests on the Isle of Wight rose by the highest rate in the region, according to figures released by Hampshire Constabulary this week.
Police arrested 14 people for drink driving during the operation, which ran from December 1 to January 1.
That was compared to ten during the same period in 2015/16.
Across Hampshire the figure rose from 215 to 222, while there was a fall in the Thames Valley area, from 325 to 316.
The number of drug-impaired drivers arrested across the two areas was 80, a rise of 63 per cent rise.
Hampshire Constabulary and Thames Valley Police (TVP) Roads Policing Ch Insp Henry Parsons said: "It’s disappointing that we continue to find so many people drink driving.
"The effects of it are so dangerous and it's not worth the risk- there is no excuse for it. These figures show that we remain committed to targeting those who cause death on our roads and make the roads less safe than they should be."
Police called for anyone who saw someone who drinks over the limit or takes drugs and drives to call them on 101 or, if it’s an emergency, dial 999.
