UPDATED SATURDAY 11:28*

FIREFIGHTERS with specialist equipment have been called to Newchurch this morning (Friday) to rescue a steer from a river.

Regular Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service crews from Newport and Shanklin, and crews with animal rescue equipment from Newport and Ryde, were called to the scene at 11am.

They were still at the scene more than two hours later, having been unable to lift the animal, now identified as a steer, out of the river due to the steep riverbanks.

*The steer was rescued later in the afternoon.
