Harrow's schools have been allocated a much needed £1 million pounds for urgent repairs, but it's only one thirteenth of the money needed to bring them up to scratch.

Education and Employment Secretary David Blunkett announced a £45 million cash boost for hundreds of London schools on Thursday last week.

In Harrow 14 schools will share the cash through the Government's New Deal for Schools. Work to be done ranges from replacing boilers to re-wiring.

The schools to benefit are: Cannon's High, Edgware; Weald First and Middle, Harrow Weald; Rooks Heath High, South Harrow; Pinner Park Middle, North Harrow; Whitmore High, South Harrow; Shaftesbury Special, Headstone; Grimsdyke First and Middle, Hatch End; Glebe First and Middle, Kenton; Stanburn First and Middle, Stanmore; West Lodge First and Middle, Pinner and St Joseph's RC First and Middle, Belmont.

Cannons High needs major work, including underpinning of the main building. It is expected that most of the work on all schools would be carried out in the summer break.

A council spokesman said schools were ranked one to four depending on the urgency of the repairs they need.

"We originally bid for £13 million, so it's a long way short of our original bid," he said. "We got all the grade ones but only some grade twos."

Councillor Maureen de Beer, Liberal Democrat chairman of the council's education committee, was very disappointed.

"We have received money for the priority schools, but I am disappointed we didn't get more to refurbish toilets in many of our primary schools," she said.

"I know the Government talked about outside toilets but I think they are splitting hairs in a way. They will be at the top of the list of our next bid. The longer it's left the more expensive it gets."
