Road safety equipment hit by fire

ROAD safety devices across the Island were set on fire in the early hours today (Thursday).

A speed camera near Lake Middle School, a flashing speed warning sign in Brighstone and a road safety trailer in Blackwater Road, Newport, were all targeted between 1.30am and 2am in incidents police believe may be linked.

The fires follow a separate incident in Wootton Bridge just over a month ago, when paint was thrown over two speed cameras.

Isle of Wight Council Head of Highways and Transport Peter Hayward said: "I am furious about this mindless vandalism, which ultimately puts people at risk and endangers lives. Our money as taxpayers will now have to be spent replacing the damaged equipment, which means other road safety projects, child cycle training and suchlike will be put at jeopardy.
"We are working hard to make sure that taxpayers' money is spent effectively and I see this vandalism as an attack on the whole community. We will work closely with the police to help make sure their investigations into these attacks are successful.
"Speed-reactive signs and safety cameras are helpful to make sure people are aware of speed limits and drive appropriately. These are located in places where we have a history of accidents. They have been very effective with the number of collisions and the average speed of motorists decreasing significantly in areas where the signs have been placed.
"The trailer carries hard-hitting messages across the Island about a range of road safety issues and is an important tool in educating drivers, which will also have to be replaced."
Anyone who might have noticed anything suspicious near the fire scenes, or seen or heard a vehicle in these areas between 1am and 2am today, should contact Newport CID on 0845 045 45 45 or call the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
