Roll up for Island’s biggest free jubilee party

THERE will be no Ryde Regatta this year but a huge party will be staged instead, featuring the Island’s biggest free lunch.

The town council has axed the long-standing regatta and is putting cash into the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee party, in Appley Park. An £18,000 grant was approved by the council for the 1950s-themed event, planned to be the Island’s biggest free diamond jubilee party.

Organisers are seeking sponsorship from businesses, organisations and other councils for the events and entertainment at the park, over the bank holiday weekend of June 2 to 4.

Local talent and produce will be at the heart of celebrations, which include the Big Lunch, on the Sunday, where children can eat at a 300ft-long table.

The event will feature free food, squash and tea, served by people dressed as teapots.

Guests will also be encouraged to bring their own picnics.

Ryde mayor, Cllr David Knowles, said: "In these difficult times, we could not justify funding both events.

"With Armed Forces Day, it would have meant we were financing three firework displays.

"So we decided not to hold the regatta this year and contribute to diamond jubilee party instead to really light up the summer. The regatta will return next year.

"Hopefully, other town and parish councils and the Isle of Wight Council will recognise this event is for the whole Island and really get behind it."

What is the rest of the IW doing ? NOTHING. I would like to know why Ryde council always seems to have a glut of excess funds. Carnival funds should be distributed across all carnivals on the island not just Ryde.

Lets hope some thought is given to providing toilets for everyone, including Changing Places toilets/portaloos. The provision of Changing Places toilets along side standard accessible toilets would make this a true community event.
