UPDATED THURSDAY 09:32*

ISLE of Wight Fire and Rescue Service crews were called to a roof fire in Chale yesterday morning (Wednesday).

The fire at a house, near Church Place, was reported by a neighbour at 9.29am.

Four fire engines were sent to the scene, along with a water carrier from Ventnor, according to Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue.

The property was fully detached according to the fire and rescue service, and no neighbouring properties were affected.

No-one was inside the property at the time fire broke out, according to fire control.

Steve Clark, of nearby guesthouse Chale Bay Farm, said guests had spotted flames coming from the roof of the building at about 9.25am.

He said several neighbours had been concerned that four dogs might be in the property, however fire control said there were no reports from firefighters on the scene of animals in the house.

Part of Military Road between South Down Road and the Chale Show site was closed and diversions put in place according to the Isle of Wight Council.

Fire investigators were due to inspect the property yesterday afternoon.

*The fire was extinguished by 4.11pm.
