STEVE Dearden would like to return to Haslingden one day - but only as a batsman.

The star all-rounder left to join Bolton Association side Elton as their professional this week after achieving his ambition to play in the Lancashire League.

Dearden passed the 50 wickets and 500 run milestones in the last two of his three seasons at Bentgate but admits the strains of bowling are taking their toll on his 38-year-old body, "My son still plays in the juniors down at Haslingden and I'll probably end up back there if they'll have me," said Dearden, who was previously pro at Radcliffe for five years.

"But it will probably only be as a batsman because I don't know how long I've got left as a bowler.

"I've had a back problem since I was 18, had injections in my shoulder and an elbow operation - all through bowling.

"I still have enough to be a pro in the Bolton Association so it was the right time to leave. It's closer to home for me and I've fulfilled my target of playing in the Lancashire League before I'm too old.

"I always wanted to play against the best pros and see if I could still do it."

Haslingden cricket manager Jack Simpson said: "Losing Steve is a massive blow this close to the season, but it gives some of our young bowlers an opportunity to fill the breach."
