THE NEW lifeboat workshop at the RNLI’s East Cowes inshore lifeboat centre was given the royal seal of approval yesterday (Thursday), when it was officially opened by the Duke of Kent.
After unveiling a commemorative plaque and praising the work of the RNLI, the Duke toured the modern £2.9 million facility, which was specifically designed for the building of Atlantic 85 class lifeboats.
Glyn Ellis, centre operations manager, said after the royal visit: “The Duke of Kent was very impressed with the workshop and how organised everything is. As the president of the RNLI, he has a long association with us and was very interested in the details of the boats.”
