A VICTIMS welfare service will remain open over the New Year holiday period to help people affected by crime.

Lewisham Victim Supports help-line will be operating on New Years Day to give advice and support for casualties of crime during the festive season.

The call centre will be operating at reduced hours 9pm to 5pm for the public holiday and then open during the regular hours of 9am to 9pm on weekdays and 9am to 7pm at weekends.

Despite a reported 21 per cent decrease in burglaries, theft from the home is the crime which people still fear most.

Calls about these crimes make up 40 per cent of all referrals received by Victim Support.

Co-ordinator Val Young said: Regardless of the severity of the crime, people may be left feeling worried or nervous at a time traditionally associated with relaxing and enjoying ourselves.

Each persons reaction to crime is very different, some people may feel unable or unwilling to talk to members of their family about how they are feeling, especially at this time of year.
