Sailing charities' plans for youth club

TWO sailing charities hope to take on a former Isle of Wight youth club site to develop their services.

Cowes Youth Club in Arctic Road was among several clubs around the Island deemed surplus to requirements by the council, following a review of youth services.

The United Kingdom Sailing Academy (UKSA), in association with the Island Youth Water Activity Centre (IYWAC), has approached the Isle of Wight Council to ask if it could be made special purchaser for the former youth centre and land.

The charities hope to expand onsite accommodation, increase the number of students that can be taught and  improve shower and changing facilities.

Part of the existing IYWAC building would be demolished to create further boat storage and parking areas.

A council report, prepared ahead of a delegated decision that can be taken on or after Tuesday, next week, recommends the charities be appointed as special purchasers on condition the site is used for youth related activities.
