A TEAM of sailmakers had a radical transformation in the hair department in aid of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation.

Gerry Faram of Sailcare.co.uk and his team of sailmakers, Robbie Southwell and Billy White, raised more than £1,415 by having their heads shaved.

Debbie Hall, of Cowes barbers Beresfords, wielded the clippers at an event hosted by Sue Wescomb at the Pier View, Cowes.

The evening featured raffle prizes including a Go Pro camera, a £150 voucher to spend at Henri Lloyd, a Musto luggage bag, a meal for four at the Pier View and a signed Australian Olympic sailing kit from Artemis Racing America’s Cup team head coach, Andrew 'Dog’ Palfrey.

Many were donated by local businesses.

Andrew Simpson was a gold and silver Olympic medallist and an America’s Cup professional, killed in a training accident in San Francisco Bay in May.

Gerry said: "Cowes’ close knit sailing community was shocked by the tragic news of Andrew’s death, with some in the town having sailed with him and many others finding inspiration from his incredible achievements and personable approach."

The Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation was set up to encourage youngsters into sailing and provide apprenticeships for those aspiring to follow careers in the industry.
