ISLE of Wight MP Bob Seely has praised the Salvation Army after visiting the Newport night shelter.

He visited The Salvation Army's hall, in Pyle Street, on New Year's Day and spoke to volunteers and the 15 homeless people staying there.

Opened in late November, the shelter will operate seven nights a week until the end of March.

Guests are offered a warm meal and professional support to help rebuild their lives.

Mr Seely said: "I was moved by the good and important work that the Salvation Army team do.

"Several people who came into the shelter over the Christmas period have already found accommodation through the work of The Salvation Army, so I am delighted that for some rough sleepers, 2018 will start with a roof over their head."

The night shelter needs more volunteers. Email lucy.rhoden@salvationarmy.org.uk to get involved.
