PLANS to transform Sandham Gardens and boost tourism have been backed by the Isle of Wight Council.
Councillors said they wholeheartedly supported the plans at yesterday's (Thursday) executive meeting, which could see Nando's and Burger King come to the site, as well as beach huts and leisure activities.
The executive agreed to vary the terms of the lease for Sandham Gardens, as requested by Sandown Town Council.
The town council is in talks with Heritage GB — the firm that runs the Needles Landmark Attraction — and is considering sub-leasing the area to the company.
Cllr Ian Ward, executive member for transport and infrastructure, and a Sandown Town Councillor, said: "The variation is a vital step forward.
"For many years Sandown has been passed over by investors but this will help promote business confidence, and that is so important."
Cllr Wayne Whittle, executive member for tourism and business development, said he wholeheartedly supported the plans.
"The regeneration of Sandown Bay is long overdue," he said.
"The town has suffered for quite some time but this will help us create a better facility for Sandown."
Cllr Julie Jones-Evans, executive member for regeneration, reassured people that the area's open spaces would be protected for young people to enjoy in the future.
