AS ICY blasts from Siberia turned most of Britain into a winter wonderland over the weekend, around 40 brave souls turned up at Small Hope Beach, Shanklin, on Sunday to take part in the sixth annual Sandman Snowman competition.

The fun event, organised by the Island 2000 Trust’s Gift to Nature project, involves locals building snowmen out of sand, using lumps of coal for eyes and carrots for noses supplied by the trust.

And although there was no snow, the cold weather ensured people taking part were grateful for mugs of warm chocolate, which were supplied by the trust volunteers.

Among the weird and wonderful 'snowmen’ were sand sculptures including a sculpture of a lizard.

Ian Boyd, of the trust, said: "There were at least 20 creations of all shapes and sizes. We will be there again next year."
