THOUSANDS of scooter enthusiasts have descended on the Isle of Wight for their annual friendly Bank Holiday "invasion."

Ryde was again their focus with many camping at Smallbrook Stadium, where a programme of weekend entertainment was organised.

But many others, preferring the comfort of hotels and B&Bs, booked into accommodation elsewhere bringing a much-needed tail-end of summer boost to a poor season for tourism businesses.

Ryde's Bank Holiday rally is considered the most popular of the rally season and attracts enthusiasts of all ages from this country and abroad.

Despite yesterday's rain crowds of scooterists remained determined to enjoy the rally and police praised their good-natured behaviour.
