UPDATED 17:23*

RESCUE services, including the Coastguard and Sandown and Shanklin Inshore Lifeboat, have been involved in a search at Sandown Bay this afternoon (Tuesday).

The search was sparked by a report of a swimmer in difficulty in the sea, 200m to the right of Sandown Pier.

Bembridge and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Teams and the Coastguard helicopter, have also been involved in the search, which was launched shortly before 1pm.

At around 3.30pm, Solent Coastguard said the search had been called off. It is believed a marker buoy or  may have been mistaken for a swimmer.

*Martin Groom of Bembridge Coastguard said they carried out an extensive search of the area, but believed it was a false alarm.

He urged Islanders to be cautious near the coast during the forecast bad weather.
