Serious collision

Isle of Wight emergency services on the scene of the fatal collision.

A TEENAGE girl has died and three other people have been seriously injured in a crash this afternoon (Thursday).

Ambulance crews and Isle of Wight fire and rescue service teams were called following a report of a collision involving two vehicles at around 3pm on the Downs Road between Lime Kiln Shute and Knighton Shute.

Two doctors from the emergency department were also sent to the scene.

*Police this evening confirmed a 14-year-old girl was killed in the crash, when a Silver Renault Megane and a Red Renault Clio collided between Knighton Shute and Rowlands Lane at 3.17pm.

The girl, who was the front seat passenger in the Clio, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a police spokeswoman.

In a statement issued this evening, the spokeswoman said: "The 18-year-old male driver of the Clio, from Sandown, was airlifted to Southampton General hospital with life-threatening injuries.

"The rear seat passenger, a 13-year-old girl, was also airlifted to Southampton General Hospital with serious injuries.

"The car driver of the Megane, a 67-year-old man, has minor injuries and was treated at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport. His wife, the front seat passenger sustained serious injuries and is also being treated at St Mary’s Hospital.

"Road remains closed while police recover and investigate the scene. Closures are likely to remain in place for approximately the next three hours.

"Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either vehicle driving immediately prior to it."
