THE first-ever Armed Forces Day, held to honour service personnel of the past, present and future, attracted thousands of people to Ryde on Saturday.
A host of events at North Walk and Appley Park were organised to mark the occasion, which was celebrated across the country for people to show their appreciation and support for the armed forces.
The parade of veterans and serving personnel provided the spectacle of the event, with the Island’s Lord Lieutenant Maj Gen Martin White and High Sheriff Gay Edwards in attendance.
"I was exceptionally proud of the public for the way they applauded the parade and it showed just how much Island people support those who have served and continue to serve," said organiser John Taylor.
The 13-hour celebration included a display of military vehicles and performances from the Cowes Royal British Legion Band and the Wight Diamonds Marching Band.
Ryde Inshore Rescue provided a sea rescue display and a beach competition was held for cadets, while in the evening a Proms in the Park Trident Concert, directed by Robin Taylor, of the Trident Concert Band, was followed by a fireworks finale.
"I think we had around 4,000 people turn up throughout the day and that is so many more than I ever imagined," said Mr Taylor.
The event cost nearly £7,000 to run and planning started around ten months ago.
A number of authorities were involved, including the Isle of Wight Council’s highways department, the police and the Royal British Legion.
"So many people have bent over backwards to help run the event and without them it wouldn’t have happened," said Mr Taylor.
• Mr Taylor would like to create a photograph and film album of Armed Forces Day and has invited anyone with images to contact him on 01983 562330.
