Sewage problem to be solved

REPAIRS to a sewer that spilled sewage into an Isle of Wight town’s high street for nearly a fortnight should be completed today (Friday).

Regarding the problems in Brading High Street, a Southern Water spokesman said: "Repairs to this damaged sewer and relocation of the surface water drain are now complete. Our team is now working on the re-instatement of the areas that needed to be excavated to carry out the repairs.

"Our team hopes to complete this re-instatement work by the end of today."

Engineers discovered the sewer was blocked with tarmac, concrete and plastic and problems were made worse by a surface water drain which had been wrongly connected by a third party.

Sewage flowing down the High Street led to a flood of complaints from residents and businesses.
