Sewage solution in the pipeline

Residents in Brading have complained about ongoing sewage problems in the town.

SOUTHERN Water has promised the sewer which caused a long-standing Isle of Wight leak will be repaired "as soon as possible."

Following the ongoing problems in Brading, a Southern Water spokesman said today (Friday): "Our engineers have carried out a CCTV survey on the sewer in Brading High Street and dug a trial hole.

"The investigation found the cause of the problem to be a build up of Tarmac and other materials, including plastic, which had entered the sewer and blocked it.

"This blockage meant the pipe backed up and the sewage was forced up through a surface water drain which had been misconnected to the sewer by a third party.

"Repairs to this damaged sewer and relocation of the surface water drain will commence as soon as possible.

"We hope to keep the road open while the work is under way as the excavation will be mainly in the footpath.

"Temporary traffic lights will be in place. However, the blockage meant the CCTV investigation couldn’t be completed and with the full extent of the repairs not known, the need for a road closure cannot be ruled out.

"We apologise in advance for any disruption these essential repairs may cause."

Residents had complained that the problem had persisted for nearly a fortnight despite their complaints.
