Borehamwood firefighters were called to put out a blazing compost heap on Sunday.
The station was alerted, at 2.30pm, after motorists on the M25 complained that smoke from the fire, at a garden centre in South Mimms' Blanche Lane, was causing drivers to swerve.
It was believed the fire started spontaneously, because compost matter can generate heat as it decomposes.
