Siren calls for peace

By County Press Reporter - Saturday, December 19, 2009
LIVING in Carisbrooke High Street was likened to living in downtown Manhattan in terms of noisy sirens and horns from emergency vehicles.
At Newport Parish Council on Monday, councillors acknowledged the excellent work carried out by the emergency services and the need for sirens in busy traffic.
However, noise pollution sometimes caused to Newport residents by the seemingly unnecessary use of sirens was described as "problematic".
Cllr Mary Craven said residents had raised the matter with her.
"This is not meant in anyway as criticism of our emergency services," she said.
"I cannot see that it’s always necessary because traffic, even on a main road, can be quiet. I do feel it is something that affects people’s quality of life."
Cllr Andy Flambard said the sirens sometimes made living in Carisbrooke High Street seem like Manhattan.
Councillors agreed to seek talks with the police, ambulance and fire and rescue services to find a resolution.
