SCORES of youngsters in Ryde were given the chance to try their hands at circus skills, sports and face painting during a summer scheme for children run by Barnardos.

The project, based at Ryde High School and Bishop Lovett Middle School, saw around 170 children, aged between five and 13, taking part in a huge range of summer activities, including dance music, cookery, martial arts, hula hooping and trips to Ryde LA Bowl.

The project was run by Barnardos Ryde Extended Services, as well as a number of other Isle of Wight-based activity providers, and took place over a four-week period during the summer.

Becky Haydock, Ryde Extended Services manager, said: "We always aim to provide a safe, fun and stimulating environment for our schemes where the children can relax, enjoy themselves, try out new activities and make new friends. We were very pleased with the turnout and are already planning more activities for children in the academic year 2010/2011."
