Spectacular aerobatics for Armed Forces Day

Royal British Legion members march past with the Lord Lieutenant of the IW, Maj Gen Martin White, taking the salute at last year’s Armed Forces Day in Ryde.

THE spectacular Yakovlevs aerobatic display team will take to the skies above Ryde today (Saturday), as part of Armed Forces Day.

The powerful, Russian-built aircraft will perform a display as part of the commemorations at North Walk and Appley Park, Ryde, at around 6.30pm.

The day gets underway at 10am and finishes at 10pm with fireworks.

Highlights include military vehicle displays, veterans, cadets and Royal British Legion Riders Branch parades, from 1.15pm, and Proms in the Park, at 7.30pm.

There will be bands performing on stage, military academy displays and singing by children from Dover Park Primary School.

The day will also feature a short ceremony at 1.45pm, when The Last Post will be played, and there will be performances by Medina Marching Band, Wight Diamonds and Vectis Corps of Drums.

Organisers hope to raise £1,000 for Family Activity Breaks, which organises family breaks for children who have lost a parent or sibling in conflict.

A drumhead service will be held at Ryde Methodist Church, in Garfield Road, at 10am on Sunday.
