NEW sports equipment has been bought for a special school on the Island, thanks to the fundraising efforts of Sainsbury’s staff.
St Catherine’s School, which caters for children and young people with speech, language and communication impairments, received equipment that included javelins, balls, racquets and bean bags on Wednesday last week.
Sainsbury’s representatives Tanya Blake, Deb Davies and Sam Tooley, presented the items to school staff.
The store’s staff raised the money from bag packing, coffee mornings, collections and a quiz night.
As part of the Sainsbury’s Active Kids campaign, family, friends and supporters of the school collected special vouchers, which were exchanged for cash for sports equipments.
The school, Sainsbury’s charity of the year, holds a sports day each year and will be introducing javelin to the event in 2010 thanks to Sainsbury’s.
Rosie Rodley, the school’s PE co-ordinator, said: "This equipment will be fantastic for our learners and they are excited at the thought of taking part in a new athletics event. We’re pleased to be able to offer our students even more sporting opportunities."
Mrs Blake, Sainsbury’s PR ambassador, said the store was delighted to help the school in any way it could.
