THE Isle of Wight Festival kicked off yesterday (Thursday), with the arrival of thousands of revellers and a live show in the Big Top.

Following performances by tribute act the Jimi Hendrix Experience, New York rockers Semi Precious Weapons and 1970s punk band The

Members, headliners Squeeze took to the stage — after an exclusive interview with the County Press.

Opening with Up the Junction, the band played a greatest hits set including Annie Get Your Gun, Tempted, Pulling Mussels (From the Shell) and the classic Cool For Cats.

"I love festivals, I'm a festival-goer as well as a performer," said singer and guitarist Glenn Tilbrook.

"As soon as we saw the line-up we decided to stay for the whole weekend and I will definitely be watching Paul McCartney. The Beatles are just the best group, the quality of the song-writing is incredible.

"I'd like to see Pink as well. I like what she does."

Chris Difford added: "I think the best thing about festivals is everyone enjoying themselves, happy as Larry. People seem to really embrace the festival spirit whatever the weather."

Glenn and Chris said they had fond memories of visiting the Island as children and were pleased to be back.

"I remember coming here when I was about ten and getting one of those vials of coloured sands. It was magical," said Glenn.

"And I played in Ryde a few years ago, which was great."

Chris said: "I remember the sands as well. And Blackgang Chine, which was brilliant despite all the hills."

The festival proper starts today (Friday), with hip hop superstar Jay-Z headlining the main stage and Suzi Quatro in the Big Top.
