Once again the Royal British Legion is organising its annual Poppy Appeal. The Legion was instrumental in the restoration of the two minutes silence on Remembrance Day to commemorate, in this simple ceremony, the sacrifices made by the men and women of our Forces, for their country and for the cause of world peace.

As a charity the Royal British Legion is entirely dependent on voluntary contributions and although time has passed, the needs have not disappeared. The Poppy Appeal directly helps over 100,000 former service men and women and their dependants. Not only do the veterans of the two world wars have to be considered, but also all those who have been involved in conflicts and peace-keeping missions between and since the wars.

I urge all Hertfordshire residents to support this year's appeal as generously as they are able, and to wear their poppy with pride. |Sir Norman Lindop DL
