THIRTY-FOUR drivers were arrested as part of the police summer drink-drive campaign on the Isle of Wight.

Hampshire Constabulary’s Operation Solo — which will continue until September 4 — resulted in 371 arrests throughout the two counties in just two months.

Police said that was a 20 per cent reduction on last year throughout the force area, with the youngest person arrested just 16 years old and the oldest 76. Eight out of ten were men. Police say June arrests were about the same as last year but the big reduction came in July.

Ch Insp Andy Bottomley said: "Any amount of alcohol can affect the way you drive, creating a slower reaction time and a feeling of invincibility, which can cause drivers to take risks.

"There is no excuse for drink driving. If you want to drink, don’t drive, and if you have to drive, just don’t drink."
