Supermarket road closure changes

A SHORTER section of a main road than first feared is to be closed as part of works to build a new supermarket.

Part of Newport Road, Cowes, will be closed for seven weeks from Monday, from the end of Three Gates Road to a public footpath, about 70 metres down from the Cowes Medical Centre.

It was initially thought the road would be closed between Northwood Garage and the reservoir.

The closure is due to the building of a sewer for the new Aldi supermarket being built on the BAE Systems land, next to Three Gates Road.

During the disruption, the Southern Vectis number 1 bus service that usually runs down Newport Road, will run non-stop from Somerton Park and Ride to the Co-op on Carvel Lane (via Three Gates Road, Place Road, Park Road and Terminus Road).

BAE Systems and the project consultants are providing a regular shuttle bus along the section not serviced during the closure (Carvel Lane, Terminus Road, Victoria Road, Mill Hill Road, Newport Road, Northwood Cemetery gates, and back again.)

A diversion route will go through Three Gates Road, Place Road, Park Road, Victoria Road, Mill Hill Road and back to Newport Road.

For further details on the roadworks, call the project consultants Peter Brett Associates 01823 445198.
