DAMAGE has been sustained to a superstore on the Isle of Wight during the stormy weather.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was called to Tesco in Ryde at 5.20pm today, after reports that the guttering had collapsed.

Fire crews used an aerial platfrom to support the section of roof that was affected.

The police and fire service had left the scene by 6.30pm.

An eyewitness said: "A silver stanchion above the mother and baby section just collapsed. I said to my husband, it is wobbling about all over the place, you should tell someone. He got out of the car and it just came down. It narrowly missed a boy and his father. There was a lot of screaming."
