DESPITE this year’s traffic chaos, more than 70 per cent of households living near the Isle of Wight Festival site continue to support holding the annual event at Seaclose Park a survey has found.

However, close to 60% of those who responded to Newport Parish Council’s latest residents’ survey thought this year’s traffic congestion and parking problems were, at best, avoidable.

The survey revealed more than 80% believed the planning for adverse weather conditions on the part of the promoters, the Isle of Wight Council, the police and the ferry operators was inadequate or worse and 55 per cent thought the licence for the festival should be reviewed.

The parish council extended this year’s survey to take in more properties closer to the town centre between Seaclose and the main shopping area.

Highlighting the continued local support for the event, Cllr Shirley Smart, chairman of the parish council’s planning and licensing committee, said: "I welcome this as the parish council has consistently supported the festival but it is important to note that, after what happened this year, the number of households uncomfortable with the possibility of a progressive increase to 90,000 people at the event has increased to more than 70 per cent of those who responded."

As previously reported, aerospace firm GKN has called for the festival’s licence to be reviewed over fears about public safety and disorder.

Large parts of the Isle of Wight were brought to a standstill by traffic chaos at the start of this year’s festival, leading to production problems for the East Cowes factory after workers were caught in jams.

The parish council, which hopes to take an active role in the review, said it would continue analyse the results of their own questionnaire, which will be shared with Solo, the council and all other interested parties.

I note the survey was carried out in and around the featival site. What about people who do not live in that area but who have to get to work or to the hospital ?
I think had they been surveyed the results would have differed from those reported.
This years complete mess must never be repeated, it was bad for the visitors bad for the people of the Island.
Over heard by me in Ryde "Im not coming here ever again" this was from people who i assume were not coming just for the festival.

With Wightlink Portsmouth to Fishbourne service it is cheaper for 3 people with a car then 3 foot passengers. And the Porrtsmouth to Ryde passenger only service is dearer still. Hardly an incentive not to bring a car

Why do festival goers need to bring cars over anyway? We don't need park and rides from all the Island car parks, we need them from the ferry ports. They should be encouraged to use public transport and come over on foot. Will never happen as Red Funnel and Wightlink will not offer any incentives to do that as they need the cars on the ferry (£'s).

All that is needed is a contingancy plan for wet weather. Simple, just take Medina college, the football club, IOW college car parks and use park & ride buses to take festival goers to the site so they can leave theier cars on hard standing.
The festival is good for the island and GKN should remember that in years past they used to shut down for Cowes week so why not shut down for the weekend of the festival?

so its going to be the same as this year then, absolutely nothing will change because residents who live near the site say its ok. sorry but the whole island needs to be consulted about the abject failure of all parties to keep the flow of traffic moving and the weeks of turmoil that the festival infrastructure causes, its ok to say its only for 4 days, it probably is if you dont live in east cowes, yarmouth, or near fishbourne because these towns have to put up with lorry loads of materials for days before and days after, and east cowes (sorry, red funnel docks) is bad enough without the extra traffic
