SURGERY at St Mary’s Hospital has remained under review this week after the hospital announced last week it was cancelling some operations due to pressures from emergency admissions.
Isle of Wight hospital bosses said they had experienced an extremely high increase in the number of emergency admissions compared with last year.
That resulted in last week’s cancellation of orthopaedic surgery and postponement of some general surgery.
A hospital spokeswoman said yesterday (Thursday) they had carried out some orthopaedic surgery this week, but the situation was being reviewed daily.
The hospital admitted 100 more patients from the emergency department this April compared to April 2011.
