THE WILD West Solent Swim returns this weekend when 70 swimmers will head from Hurst Castle to the Isle of Wight on Sunday to raise money for the West Wight Sports Centre.

The swimmers will depart in pairs at around 8am, accompanied by 35 kayakers and Freshwater Independent Lifeboat, and reach Colwell Bay around a hour later.

Last year, the sponsored swim raised around £27,000 for the sports centre, which is a registered charity, and another £3,000 for other charities.

One of the swimmers, Vix Lowthion, 36, from Brighstone, said: "I take my three boys to the sports centre all the time.

"I’ve never done anything like this before, although I was presented with a 25m badge for swimming when I was about eight.

"The swim is around one-and-a-half miles and, in practice, we have had to swim 100 lengths in 90 minutes to show we can do the course."

Vix, who will also be raising money for the Island Foodbank, added: "I’ve had a lot of help and support with sponsorship from churches in the West Wight, and the Foodbank is very important."

*The swim was postponed this morning (Sunday) until September 1, due to bad weather.
