Swimmers take the plunge for Little Explorers

First to cross The Solent was Penny West, of Yarmouth.

MORE THAN 40 people made a big splash by doing a sponsored cross-Solent swim in aid of the continued development of an Island pre-school.

A group supporting Shalfleet Little Explorers nursery and pre-school hopes to have raised around £5,000 by doing a point-to-point swim from Hurst Castle to Yarmouth on Saturday morning.

Accompanied by support vessels, which included RIBs, kayaks and Freshwater lifeboat, the 43 swimmers — comprising parents, staff, volunteers on the Little Explorers management committee and friends — swam against a strong tide on the 1.3-mile route.

Following a safety brief, the swimmers set off at 6.35am.

A friend of the pre-school, Penny West, of West Hill, Yarmouth, was first home at 7.19am.
